There is little information about this heroic sculpture except that it comes from the House of Scientists in Pompeii. Statuette of an athlete or a warrior? This is the title given to him at the museum, but his pose does not suggest the possibility of having a discobole in his hand (even at rest), the absence of a distinctive sign like a banner of victory and the presence of armor at his feet suggest more a warrior in my opinion.
I can not help but make a connection with a character in the series Spartacus, his general physiognomy, but especially his face and curly hair much like the character Varro (Jai Courtney).
This sculpture is at Mann in Naple and exhibited in Montreal in the beautiful Pompeii exhibition until September 2016 at the MMFA.
